Cemeteries in transformation – A Swiss community conflict study

For the first time, this study presents a natural experiment describing and explaining selected stakeholders’ attitudes toward transformation of cemeteries into urban green spaces. In 2020, real-life community conflict unfolded in Bern, capital Switzerland, over plans to close smallest its three municipal by 2023. This analyzes representative sample (N = 519) city’s adult population that adjacent town, Ostermundigen, capturing views residents district contrasting them with those people living outside district. It also compares cemetery visitors non-visitors. Survey interviews were conducted via telephone through an online panel. The focuses on conflicts triggered alternative land-use plans, highlighting need include groups are both familiar unfamiliar cemeteries.
